As 2025 approached, I wanted to create something truly special to celebrate the unique charm of Flower Cats. That’s how the Flower Cat Botanical Chart Poster came to life—a detailed, whimsical design that combines my love for nature and cats into a single piece of art.

The Concept

The idea was to blend the classic aesthetic of botanical charts with the playful twist of cats hidden within flowers. Each flower on the poster is intricately illustrated, with a unique cat snugly integrated into its petals, leaves, or stems. The result is a collection of 20+ Flower Cats, each with its own personality and charm, numbered for easy reference.

The Flowers and Their Cats

Every flower was carefully chosen, not just for its visual appeal but also for the story it could tell with its feline companion. Some highlights include:

• Crocus Orange Cat: Vibrant and cheerful, like the first crocuses of spring.
• Lotus Calico Cat: Serene and elegant, a reflection of calm waters.
• Sunflower Tabby Cats: Bright and lively, just like sunflowers reaching for the sun.
• Rose Sphynx Cat: A blend of boldness and beauty, much like the iconic rose.
• Buttercup Tortico Cats: Small and sweet, nestled in delicate buttercups.

Each Flower Cat was designed to feel alive, with cats peeking, lounging, or blending seamlessly into their floral surroundings.

The Design Process

The poster was entirely digitally illustrated using my tablet and Photoshop, a process that allowed me to focus on intricate details and vibrant colors. It took several months to finalize, from sketching the initial concepts to perfecting every petal and whisker.

1. Sketching: I began by digitally sketching each flower and cat combination, ensuring the composition was balanced and visually appealing.
2. Coloring: Using a mix of vibrant and soft tones, I carefully colored each flower and cat to capture their distinct essence.
3. Numbering and Labeling: To give it a botanical chart feel, each Flower Cat was assigned a number, making it easy to reference and identify.

Does Your Shop Name Really Matter?

If you’re thinking about starting an Etsy shop or rebranding your own, you might be wondering, does the name really matter? Honestly, I used to believe that it didn’t matter all that much. I thought as long as I created art I was passionate about and put effort into building my shop, people would find me. And to some degree, that’s true. But what I’ve learned over time is that while your art or products are the star of the show, your shop name is the first impression people get—it’s the introduction to your brand.

More importantly, your shop name should represent what you do. It should be catchy enough to stick in people’s minds but also descriptive enough that potential customers can get a sense of what they’ll find in your store.

Why I Chose to Change My Shop Name

When I started Banana Bird Boutique, my work revolved around creating fun, quirky wordplay illustrations. I would mix and match unexpected elements and create cute, humorous designs. It was really fun, but my art began to shift in a new direction. After one of my pieces, Daisy Cat, blew up on Instagram, I noticed that people were drawn to my illustrations of pets that are drawn in the middle of flowers so it is not that visible from far away. I started receiving custom requests for this style of art, and soon enough, it became the core of what I do.

As I leaned into this new direction—pets in the middle of flowers—the name “Banana Bird Boutique” just didn’t feel right anymore. It no longer represented the heart of my shop or the type of artwork I was creating. I wanted something that conveyed the dreamy, floral, and pet-inspired theme that my shop had transformed into. That’s when I knew it was time to rebrand.

The Birth of Flower Cat Garden

The name Flower Cat Garden instantly felt like the perfect fit. It’s simple, descriptive, and reflects exactly what I do now: creating illustrations of cats and other pets in flowers. It’s still playful and whimsical, like my original work, but it also feels more aligned with my current art style and the audience I’m trying to reach.

Not only is Flower Cat Garden a better reflection of my brand, but it’s also better for SEO (search engine optimization). The words “flower” and “cat” are keywords that people searching for pet or nature-inspired art might be typing into search engines or Etsy’s own search bar. So, while naming a store might seem like a small thing, it’s actually an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to growing your online presence.

How to Choose a Shop Name That Represents You

If you’re thinking about naming or renaming your shop, here are a few tips I’ve learned through my rebranding experience:

1. Keep it Catchy, but True to Your Brand
   A catchy name is great, but it’s more important that it resonates with what you actually create. You want people to remember it, sure, but you also want them to have a sense of what you’re offering just by hearing or seeing the name.
2. Think About Your SEO
   Use words that your target audience might search for. If you’re selling pet illustrations, consider including “pet” or “animal” in your name. If you create nature-themed art, think about words like “garden,” “flower,” or “forest.”
3. Be Willing to Evolve
   It’s okay to start with one name and change it later as your art or product line evolves. Don’t feel locked into the first name you choose, especially if your brand takes on a new direction like mine did.
4. Test It Out
   Say your potential shop name out loud. How does it feel? Does it roll off the tongue? Does it make sense for the type of products you’re selling? Share it with friends or loyal customers and get their feedback.

Embracing Change

Rebranding from Banana Bird Boutique to Flower Cat Garden wasn’t just about updating my Etsy name—it was about embracing the changes in my creative path. And honestly? It’s been the best decision for my shop. My customers now instantly understand the essence of my work, and it has helped me connect more deeply with my target audience.

In the end, the most important thing about naming your shop is making sure it aligns with your creative vision and speaks to the people you want to reach. Photo Guidelines

To create the best possible result, I need a clear reference photo — preferably where your pet is curled up, lying, or sitting in a round-ish position that suits the flower format. Most pets work wonderfully: cats, dogs, bunnies, guinea pigs, ferrets, and more.

Here is an example of the best possible looking photos for flower cats, as written before, it can also be ; bunny, dog, hamster, ferret, guinea pig or any other animal that would fit into middle of a flower.

Here’s an example: A dog placed in one of my existing flower designs—again, the colors were customized to the client’s liking.

A few years ago, I got one idea with a simple yet intriguing concept: merging the forms of black cats with vibrant yellow sunflowers. The idea was to create a playful and visually captivating series that would delight viewers with its subtle complexity. Little did I know, this artistic experiment would capture the hearts of many and become a viral hit.

The Optical Illusion

The magic of Sunflower Cats lies in its optical illusion. At a glance, the illustrations seem to be merely a beautiful array of sunflowers. However, as you take a closer look, the silhouettes of black cats emerge, seamlessly integrated into the the middle of petals and leaves. This clever use of negative space means that from a distance, the black cats are almost invisible, blending into the artwork until you focus on the details.

The Viral Success

The second or third illustration in this series, which I named “Daisy Cat illustration,” gained unexpected popularity. People were enchanted by the surprise element of discovering the hidden cats among the daisies. This delight led to a surge of interest, and soon, Sunflower Cats became a beloved theme in cat lover comunity.

The Significance of Black Cats

The choice of black cats was not accidental. Black cats have long been surrounded by superstition, often considered bad luck in various cultures. This irrational belief has resulted in black cats being less likely to be adopted and more likely to remain in animal shelters. Through my art, I hoped to shed a positive light on these beautiful creatures, showcasing their elegance and charm in a whimsical setting.

I work digitally, primarily using Photoshop and Procreate to bring my ideas to life. The process begins with creating detailed outlines of the cats and flowers, carefully planning how they will intertwine. V video vas popeljem skozi cel proces, zdaj če ga boste pogledali in se vam bo morda zdelo, to pa je res kaotično. Ilustriranje knjige je cel kreativni proces in mnogokrat delam več zadev neankrat, mnogo krat se vrnem nazaj in kaj tudi popravim. Včasih imam pavze in včasih delam en teden skupaj. Ampak to je po mojem mnenju ta magija ustvarjanja slikanice.

Kot sem že povedala in zapisala, ljudje me skoraj vsak dan sprašujejo kako izdati knjigo in vse mogoče v zvezi z otroškimi pravljicami in slikanicami. Zdelo se mi je bolj koristno za vse nas, da vam to tako prikažem. V zadnjih dveh letih sem ilustrirala štiri knjige, od teh so bile tri založene. Dve izdani v samozaložbi, ena pri angleški založbi. Eno pa sem naredila v privatnem okolju ampak je bila tudi super. Ker sem si letos zadala cilj da več govorim in manj rišem, ga želim na tak način tudi dosežt. Zato sem se tudi odločila da vam čimbolj slikovito prikažem ta celoten proces ilustriranja in izdajanja knjige preko videa. Pa še mene lahko spoznate, na nek nenavaden način.

Zdi se mi da se v Sloveniji strogo varuje informacije, ki imajo potencial, da lahko z njimi nekaj zaslužiš, sama sem se odločila da bom to z vami delila preko Youtube-a, brezplačno. Menim da bi moral marsikdo vedeti kako se knjigo izda, še posebej pa kako se knjigo ilustrira.

Ilustriranje knjige je res dolgotrajen postopek, to definitivno ni v enem mesecu. Pri večini ilustratorjev se to dela od več mesecev do več let. Seveda nisem uspela prikazati čisto vsega, ampak toliko da boste vedeli, ker je še vedno mnogo dileme in vprašanj še posebej glede digitalnih ilustracij.
Na vsake toliko časa mi skuša kdo dopovedati da digitalna umetnost ”to pa res ni prava umetnost” ampak niti ne vedo kako se tega lotim in zakaj sem si za tehniko izbrala digitalno ilustracijo.

Res sem ponosna na ta projekt, sprejela sem ga že zaradi tega, ker mi je bila zgodbica zelo všeč. Menim da je prav posebna, ni tista klasična. Ampak to rečejo vsi. Moram pa priznati, da sem v preteklih letih prebrala res ogromno pravljic, več kot bi si želela priznati in ta je definitivno izstopala.

S Patricijo sva dobro sodelovali in še vedno sodelujeva. Morda je zato ta projekt bil tako uspešen in zabaven.

Tukaj bom še na hitro napisala, kaj je vse potrebno narediti.

Ko imate datoteko v wordu ( to je za avtorje ) si rečete ”hmm okej, čas da to nekdo nariše”, najdete si ilustratorja. Vsak ilustrator ni za vse, tako da si najdite ustreznega ilustratorja. Za prebrati mu dajte besedilo in se potem odloči, če je primeren za to ali ne. Potem začneta skupaj delat na izdelavi knjige, najboljše da v tej fazi že lektorirate zadevo in je potem ne spreminjate več.

Ilustrator oz. ilustratorka vam bo uredila story board in oblikovala likovne junake, to so po navadi skice. Po tem, ko se bosta skupaj odločila kako bosta nadaljevala. Odvnisno kakšna ilustratorka je, jaz osebno sama umestnim ilustracije in besedilo skupaj, ker imam ozadje iz grafičnega oblikovanja oz. ker sem v originalu grafična oblikovalka. Zato dodaten grafični oblikovalec ni potreben pri tem projektu. Okej, ko je tak daleč da so ilustracije pobarvane in umeščene v besedilo in smo vsi zadovoljni, po tem je čas da se oblikuje platnica. Platnica se oblikuje na koncu, razen če naročnik želi to prej, za kakšno promocijo itd…
Oke j… ko smo zadovoljni z notranjostjo knjige, ko so vse ilustracije dokončane, tekst lektoriran, platnica oblikovana, se po tem to založi. Tukaj bom napisala za samozaložbo. Kot sem v video že povedala, registrirano morate imeti eno dejavnost in ja lahko je tudi zavod, drugače pa d.o.o. ali s.p..
Kolofon ali notranjost knjige pošljete na nuk in tako registrirate knjigo, da lahko gre tudi v knjižnice in da ja uradno izdana. Napovedat še morate ceno knjige na RS za knjigo. Po prb. treh dneh vam iz Nuka pošljejo CIP zapis in ta cip zapis ISBN in vse to vam bo vaša ilustratorka vstavila v knjigo. Morate pa dodati še črtno kodo in ceno na zadnjo stran platnice. Po tem pa je na vas kako boste to oglaševali.

Če imate knjigo v več jezikih – vsak jezik posebej registrirate in za vsak jezik dobite potem posevej ta cip zapis, saj je logično. Druga knjiga, drug isbn.

Here is a spread from my sketchbook

After some time, I revisited my idea and began to re-illustrate it. Admittedly, it wasn’t easy or quick. In fact, it took me a few long months of drawing and redrawing to get everything right. I tinkered with the composition, and I shifted bits and pieces around until my mouse house began to look just right.

At first, I was hesitant to add any color because I didn’t want to spoil the lines and curves that made the house so unique, but eventually I decided that coloring it in would give my mouse home that extra boost it needed. So, I brought out my digital color palette and slowly began adding life and vibrancy to each and every corner of the house.

After many hours of dedication and love, I finally created my favorite illustration yet – Mouse House. But I didn’t stop there – I decided to take it to the next level by creating a winter version complete with snowy roof, snowflakes falling from the sky and even christmas tree with gifts underneath.

As if that were not enough, I also created a special New Year’s Eve illustration that included the mouse house looking bright and festive, decorated with fire works in the background.

In the end, the journey to creating Mouse House was all worth it. The joy of bringing an idea to life and perfecting it was something I will never forget. Who knows what my next project wil be, but I know that I will keep going – redrawing, perfecting, and illustrating something beautiful, one idea at a time.
